Most people will experience a bout of tooth pain in their lives that they need to deal with themselves before being able to see a dentist. Painkillers. Keeping a bottle of Aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen in the medicine cabinet is key. If you find yourself dealing with dental pain that just won’t go away, soothe the ache with a painkiller while you wait to make a trip to the dentist. When your teeth hurt, everything else in your life just seems inconsequential.
Apply a cold compress. Whether it is a cold rag soaked in ice water, or a soft gel ice-pack wrapped in a dish cloth, applying something cold to the outside of your jaw to try and numb the area will also help reduce the pain until you are able to see a professional about it.
Numb the area. In addition to applying a cold compress and taking a painkiller, you can buy over the counter numbing agents which you can apply to the tooth, or teeth in question which are capable of providing, while not dentist quality relief, a considerable amount while schedule an appointment with your dentist.
Clean your mouth thoroughly. Often times tooth pain is caused by small bits of food that have become lodged in between teeth that are exacerbating pain related to tooth decay or gingivitis. Floss around the tooth up into the gums and then brush the area after. You may want to take a painkiller before attempting this.
Saltwater rinse. In addition to brushing and flossing the area, a soothing saltwater rinse can help calm inflammation as well as sanitize the area. Pour a teaspoon of table salt into a cup of warm water and rinse for 60 seconds.
In Case of Emergency. Some tooth pain can be managed with the tips above, but if you in fact have a serious dental emergency on your hands, you shouldn’t delay seeking medical help. If you’re bleeding from the mouth, have lost a tooth, have bulges or swelling in your mouth or facial area, you may be having an emergency and should contact your dentist immediately.
