Afraid Of The Dentist? 6 Things To Know About Sedation Dentistry

If you have been putting off visiting the dentist because you’re afraid, maybe you should talk to your dentist about sleeping through your appointment. Sleep dentistry, also known as conscious sedation dentistry, is a safe and simple way to calm your fears and care for your teeth at the same time.

At each Dawson Dental Centre we offer various forms of sedation to help you feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment. Sleep dentistry is helpful for anyone who is a bit of a scaredy cat about dental work. It’s also beneficial if you need a lot of dental work done, have a severe gag reflex or have difficulty getting numb. It’s also safe and suitable for children.

You can receive anesthesia or sedation for any type of dental work: from cleanings and fillings to root canals and extractions. We can replace crowns or dentures, restore sore gums to good health, whiten yellow or stained teeth, fix a chipped tooth, insert dental implants, and more.

You’ll feel no discomfort and be off in dreamland while we’re working on your teeth. You’ll wake up feeling refreshed and with a beautiful, new, healthy smile.

Types Of Sedation Dentistry

 Sedation Chart

Nitrous Oxide

Often known as “laughing gas”, this provides a mild general anesthetic that creates a calming sense of euphoria. The gas levels can easily be adjusted to create the desired affect. With moderate sedation, you’re still conscious and responsive.

Oral Sedation

We can give you oral medication in the form of liquid or pills to put you in a relaxed, drowsy state during your appointment. They can be taken the night before to help you sleep, and one hour before your appointment to significantly reduce anxiety during any treatment. You will still be sedated when your appointment is done so you will need someone to take you home.

Deep Sedation

Deeper (unconscious) sedation can also be used and that usually requires an intravenous injection. You will be groggy when wake up so you will need someone to escort you home.

General anesthetic

This deep level of sedation is requested in advance of your appointment and is performed by a specialist in our offices at Dawson Dental. Once again, you will be groggy upon waking and will need to be escorted home.
