Halloween is only 2 days away and while our kids love the thrill of dressing up and going door to door collecting large quantities of candy, one could say that the trick-or-treating candy haul is pretty much a parent’s (and your dentist’s) scariest sight.
Thankfully, some sweets are worst than others for your teeth. Of course, as a dentist I don’t advocate for children eating large amounts of sugary treats, but it is that time or year after all, so I thought it would be helpful tips for parents to have a list of which treats are the worst and (relative) better for their kids’ teeth.
Taffy and candies filled with caramel, coconut pieces or nuts are the worst kinds of candy for your little ones teeth because they stick to everything inside your mouth, including the grooves of your teeth. The longer a piece of food sticks to your teeth, the longer bacteria can feed on it – which produces the acid that can cause cavities.
Hard candy like lollipops or jawbreakers, are almost as bad as sticky candies. Although they do not stick to your mouth, they take a long time to dissolve. The longer the food stays in your mouth, the more acidic your mouth becomes.
Sour candies are highly acidic and can quickly break down tooth enamel. Our Dawson dentists recommend that you wait 30 minutes before your child brushes their teeth after consuming sour candies; otherwise they might be brushing the acid into individual tooth grooves.
Sugary snacks all contain high amounts of sugar, which can cause tooth decay. Examples of these kinds of snacks are: (yes you guessed it!) Candy corn, cookies and cotton candy.
The (relative) Best:
Sugar-free gum may be the best treat this Halloween season (and any other season) because it can actually dislodge food particles from between the teeth, increase saliva production and leaves no sticky residue.
Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies help stimulate saliva, which can help prevent a dry mouth. A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth faster, increasing the risk of cavities.
Dark Chocolate, with no sticky fillings, will generally not stick to your teeth and therefore is a much better option if you’re craving something sweet this time of the year.
When your child has turned their back and you have the urge to stash half of their candy, wouldn’t it be nice to leave a filled high fructose and corn syrup sack somewhere else other than your living room floor? Dawson Dental offers the perfect solution for getting rid of exactly that! At your next cleaning or if your just walking by you can drop off your “extra” Halloween Candy before Saturday, November 15th and you could win a Kids Sonicare electric toothbrush. Every little bit counts as we will be donating everything to the local boys and girl club.
