We sat down with Toronto downtown dentist Dr. Naila Ladha to ask her a few questions about how she translates her love for dentistry into an exceptional patient experience. Learn more about Dr. Ladha by following her on twitter: @SmilesByNaila
Q : If you could have the smile of any Hollywood celebrity, whose would you want?
A: Halle Berry has an amazing smile. I wouldn’t mind swapping!
Q: What makes a great smile?
A: I think a lot of it is the energy behind the smile. I see them all day long and have come to appreciate the beauty in all different types of smiles. Patients who come in for regular dental care and who value good oral health generally have great smiles however 🙂
Q: If money and time were no object, what dental treatment would you give everyone?
A: Invisalign invisible braces are a wonderful service we offer our patients. Time and money tend to be a concern with patients who are debating this treatment but if neither were a factor to consider, then I can say that for both aesthetic and health reasons Invisalign would benefit almost every patient I come across.
Q: Some people say that dentists are known for inflicting pain, but what’s the greatest joy about being a dentist?
A: It’s always a ‘feel good’ moment for me when I can help convert a dental sceptic into a full-on believer. I see many, many patients who, because of anxiety or fear have neglected their oral health and with a little TLC and some quality care I love to see them change how they view coming to the dentist.
Q: What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened when you had someone in the chair?
A: Each room has two flat screen tvs. I’ve had patients take a break from treatment so we can watch some Young and the Restless or The View before getting back to business..that’s always fun 🙂
Q: If you had to name the single most important quality of a good dentist, what would it be?
A: Empathy. The relationship between a dentist and her patient is unique from other health care providers in that we aspire to have long term relationships with our patients. Communication and chemistry is super important in maintaining these relationships. The clinical skills (one hopes) are present because we’ve gone through extensive training to be able to provide the services that we do, however I find that patients are more focused on how you make them feel. It’s common knowledge that coming to the dentist isn’t everyone’s favourite thing to do but if a patient feels understood and their concerns feel met I find that they are more likely to not just be present for continuing care but to encourage their loved ones to do the same.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice for someone who has a fear of going to the dentist?
A: Become as informed as possible about every aspect of your visit… I find the fear that comes from my patients stems from the unknown. Once patients are able to articulate their fears I present as much information as I can to educate my patients about their concerns and that ultimately helps alleviate the fear.
Q: What would you say is the single best way people can save on dental costs?
A: Come in for regular dental hygiene and dental exams so that we can help you maintain your oral health and catch small dental concerns before they can become bigger and ultimately more expensive concerns should they be neglected for too long.
Q: How should people go about trying to find the best dentist?
A: Ask your friends and family. There’s nothing better than a good referral from someone you trust.
Q: What’s the single best thing you love about living & working in Toronto Downtown?
A: Toronto is a diverse and vibrant city. Our patients at Dawson Toronto Downtown Rosedale in the heart of TO, are fun and interesting and some have even become good friends.
Q : If you were to pick the one thing that always make you smile, what would it be?
A: DESSERT 🙂
