The number of kids who require 6-10 fillings is on the rise. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that increase in the past 40 years. Nationwide, dentists have also observed this phenomena which is occurring at all income levels. The level of decay they’re observing is often so severe that pediatric sedation dentistry is required.
Dr. Edward Gelfand, a father of four, who provides dentistry asleep for young children and adults has personally noticed this widespread rise in preschool cavities. He offers the following preventative steps to resolve this largely preventative issue:
- Brush your child’s teeth for two minutes twice per day. Make this non-negotiable just like any other hard rule in your household. He recommends a fun new web site called 2min2x for parents and their children to visit and learn more through videos and games.
- Bring your child to see the dentist as early as six months of age. Many parents don’t realize that they should be bringing their child to the dentist much earlier than they would have expected.
- Start using toothpaste with fluoride in it when the child is able to brush their teeth without swallowing it (approximately 6-9 years of age).
- Don’t allow your child to sip on sugary drinks or milk all day long. They should be consumed as a snack or part of a healthy meal. Not a tool to calm them down before bed or throughout the day.
- Allow your children to drink fluoridated tap water. When the water is filtered or bottled, this key ingredient to improve prevention is removed.
- Encourage your child to brush their own teeth, and join them by completing the process to ensure that their teeth are brushed properly.
