What are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin plastic material used to protect the chewing surfaces of the teeth. It is generally applied to decay-prone surfaces of the teeth, usually the back molars and premolars of children. Sealants come in liquid form that quickly hardens to form a shield over these chewing surfaces.
Brushing can be tricky for kids, especially when it comes to reaching those deep back teeth. Even with the best brushing habits, molars and premolars can be tough to clean thoroughly, making them more prone to cavities. That’s where dental sealants come in.
Our clinical team here at Dawson Dental is always ready to assist you or your children with the prevention of tooth decay. Our dentists, registered dental hygienists, or level II dental assistants are all able to provide this service to help keep teeth cavity-free!

Common Questions About Sealants & Cavity Prevention
At Dawson Dental, we believe that prevention is the first step to a healthy smile – especially when it comes to kids.
-
Why get sealants?
The chewing surfaces of the back teeth are usually rough and uneven, with small pits and grooves, making them an ideal place for cavities to develop. Food and germs can get trapped in these uneven areas, where bacteria in the mouth can then convert the sugar in food into acid, leading to cavities.
Sealants prevent germs and food from entering these areas, which can cause tooth decay.
-
When should sealants be placed?
Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in, before decay has a chance to impact the teeth.
Sealants also protect worn and sensitive surfaces on adult teeth since adults can still get decay.
-
Besides sealants, are there other ways to prevent tooth decay?
Yes! The best way you can help prevent tooth decay is to brush with fluoride toothpaste, drink fluoridated water, and floss regularly.
Sealants and fluoride used together provide a solid defence against tooth decay.
-
How are sealants put on?
First, the tooth is cleaned and dried thoroughly so the surface is easier for the sealant to bond to.
The tooth is rinsed and dried once more, and the sealant is then applied in liquid form and hardens in a few seconds with a special dental light.
